This attribute indicates the type of transportation used at any point on a route, and is drawn from agency-provided GTFS feeds.

Valid options are:

  • Bus: Used for short- and long-distance bus routes

  • Cable car: Used for street-level rail cars where the cable runs beneath the vehicle

  • Ferry: Used for short- and long-distance boat service

  • Funicular: Any rail system designed for steep inclines

  • Gondola: Cable transport (aerial lift, suspended cable car) where cabins, cars, gondolas, or open chairs are suspended by means of one or more cables

  • Light rail: Any light rail or street level system within a metropolitan area (tram, streetcar)

  • Monorail: Railway in which the track consists of a single rail or a beam

  • Rail: Used for intercity or long-distance travel

  • Subway: Any underground rail system within a metropolitan area

  • Trolley bus: Electric buses that draw power from overhead wires using poles

Note that this filter applies to the entire trip and will include trips in which any segment uses one of these submodes. This means that bus can be selected as a submode, and a rail-only agency can be selected using the transit agency filter, and there will still be results that should be interpreted as trips that used both a bus AND also the rail-only agency.
